Logos for Musicians

11/13/2015

why you might want one

Should Musicians invest in a logo?

A lot of musicians change identities from album to album, and there isn't anything wrong with that as long as they have thought that through. There are a few good things that go along with shifting with your work, but there are probably more negatives than positives. in my mind this creates an inconsistency with a musician’s brand only to lead to less recognition. basically, this makes it difficult for fans and followers to recognize their past and future work. Another big problem is, logo quality shifts from album to album leaving fans to wonder about the consistency of sound and content quality of each album… not a good thing for people to be thinking about while holding two of their favorite CDs and 15 bucks.
Music is an art, but even artists benefit from consistancy.
I do understand that Music is an art, and with that huge changes in music style and content occurs. When a musician puts out an album 2 years apart from their last one, chances are they have changed quite a bit, but I don’t think neglecting personal identity to leave things open for your album cover branding is the best option. If you are working toward a longer goal, you will find fans and followers cling to consistency.
Logo quality shifts, from album to album, leave fans to wonder about the consistency of your sound and content quality.
Get it done right the first time.
Getting a good logo right away could hold all your albums together even through brand changes (if done correctly) creating a consistency that a buyer can count on. Not to mention the tour posters that will remain with the same logo for years. this will promote recognition when returning to places you have performed before, and attract people who have seen your logo before. Lastly, everyone tells you "Don't judge a book by its cover," but we all do. it is too bad a lot of the time, but that's how humans survive in a world saturated with information. Your identity is important. do it right.

It's not right for everyone.
Of course don’t forget to take in account what type of musician you are. think about where you would use it and when you would use it. It could be that you are a musician playing on a cruise and you have no intention of separating yourself with that company because you would like to stay with that company for a very long time.

Maybe you don’t need one. It all depends on what you want to accomplish and what your willing to invest in your music career.

As an example, I was trying to find musicians without logos and I wasn’t coming up with much. I know Amy Winehouse switched her logo from album to album. She was extremely successful as a musician, but I would argue, a solid personal brand could have possibly gotten her further as an artist.

So, Yes or no?
to simplify it, If you plan on doing music for yourself, you will definitely
benefit from a consistent logo. If you plan on working for schools, and bigger businesses, maybe hold out, it might not be worth the investment.
