What we do
Don't be a loose cannon, aim your efforts to get effective results.
Life is plump full of options. It is staggering when a high school student is asked what they want to do with their life. The idea that you can do ANYTHING is intimidating. As technology increases, your options on where to focus your energy and what to accomplish with your life becomes increasingly difficult. Don't get me wrong, this is a very GOOD THING, and it should be looked at as such, but in order to focus our efforts and become efficient doers, we must build parameters
How do you sort through it all? where do you start?
The trick is, to know yourself have a purpose.
How we do it
Stop letting the world tell you who you are. It sounds simple, but It's something I had to learn. I searched for a long time. Wondering who I am and what I am supposed to be doing. I started writing on the subject, I read and listened to podcasts and I finally came to a conclusion that I didn't understand.
why its important
I don't know where the idea first came to me but I remember vividly when it finally stuck. I was listening to a Simon Sinek talk "Start with Why". It changed everything.
it turns out, I knew WHAT I was doing. I loved it. It was designing and illustrating, and I couldn't see it anyway else. WHAT was only a third of it.
I also had to know HOW to do what I was doing. that was also simple. I hope to always be learning but I knew the basics of how to do what I was doing.
The final piece was the hard part. Why? Why do I do it? it's obviously not to get rich. I do it for free on occasion. So it wasn't about money. later that week I heard something from another great speaker/teacher who said, "The things that make you weird as a kid will make you great tomorrow" not sure if that is the exact quote but thank you James Victory. Another Breakthrough
Looking back to when I knew everything.
Like most middle-class Americans growing up in the late 80s and 90s I consumed an alarming amount of television. This made my "why" seem obvious. I only drew as a kid because I loved the Ninja Turtles and X-MEN. I'm primed for telling stories. I just never knew it.
once you have your WHY nailed down, build it from the inside out. (again learned from Simon Sinek)
I want to help others tell their story and share my ideas with the world. The message I deliver is simple and efficient making my work easy to understand and effective. I do this through branding and illustration.
That is my purpose!
Once you find your purpose you can pretty much accomplish it in any way you want. Your purposes most important asset is it's why. The WHAT can be changed but your WHY should remain pretty steady. I don't always have to illustrate and I don't always have to design, but I should always try to tell stories and share ideas.
