Composition   Probs

A while back I drew a piece in hopes it would be something really good. I drew it with little pre planning, reling on my excitement to drive the project to become something great. A day went by and I was still enjoying the idea but there was something wrong with my execution.

In normal art process, I get to the point of despising my current project. Most of the time it is in fear i will not be able to produce the idea in my head. When I push through that moment and choose to continue I am usually glad I did. but part of the process is knowing when to push through and when to add the piece to the local landfill. Most of the time you just have to endure through it in order to have an end product.

I have met a lot of people who work in the field and also many hobbyists. The majority of these creatives, Though different in many ways, have something in common.  The thing I notice most with creative people is that they dislike there own work. This might seem like a bad trait but I believe it is what makes us better. I believe you absolutely must see the flaws in your work. That point of uncertainty is the key to learning and improving.

Today I found out what was wrong with the design drawing I had such hopes for. It's a simple tool for design, Illustration and photography yet for some reason I disregard it very often. The Simple tool I decide to leave out in a number of my designs is composition. Looking through my past projects I have realized I am severely lacking in this department and that I can not wait to fix this problem area.

As soon as I realized how easy of a fix it was I about knocked over my coffee cup in search of my sketch book.

Just so you have a visual, here is where the drawing started. The main focal point is no where near where it should be and there is no flow for your eye to follow that I an make sense of.

Without my confidence I began coloring the project in hopes I could fix the problem in the upcoming steps. but it still wasn't speaking to me....

In most cases I would just finish it and show the world my monster. I would then just apply this knowledge to my next project and hope I didn't do it again.

If you don't agree with the line work, Im sorry
If you don't agree with my color choices, I understand (but not agree).
If you don't agree with my composition, well then, I will certainly never win.

Hey Ben, just wanted to drop a note and let you know I really like how this newest art piece turned out, may buy a print of this one, great concept in this age of an unknown future of what ends we will go to just to buy something easy, even if it's inferior, that's kind of my take on it anyway, and the children's book direction looks pretty dang good also. I'm really liking how your color work is turning out! Been following your blog, thought I'd try and keep up with you, your process, and your thoughts and am enjoying. Thinking of starting a blog of my own, maybe my years of experience help guide someone. Trying to get back on track with more artistic ventures. Keep those juices flowing Ben and tell Rebecca hi, oh congrats on the new job!

Hey thanks barb, I'm glad your reading. I have been out of the country these past two weeks so I haven't had time to keep with it. I will be back in full swing soon. I'm glad you like the print. I was pretty excited to show it. Glad to hear your doing well and can't wait to see the blog!
